Cornell University Feminist, Gender and Sexuality Studies. Events spring 2012

Cornell's Feminist, Gender, & Sexuality Studies (FGSS) Program is one of the largest interdisciplinary programs in the College of Arts and Sciences, involving approximately 150 members of the greater Cornell faculty, staff and Ithaca community. It is also historically one of the first university women's studies programs in the country. FGSS offers courses, most of them cross-listed with other departments, in topics ranging from "Sex, Gender, and Communication " to "Women's Activism and Social Change in the Twentieth Century U.S." to "Theories of Reproduction" to "Food, Gender, and Culture." Close to 500 students enroll in courses cross-listed with FGSS.
The Program is governed by an Advisory Committee comprised of faculty, students and staff whose charge is to advise the Director and guide the Program's intellectual direction and sponsored activities; a Core Faculty, comprised of those faculty members who most actively teach and advise in the Program and whose membership also governs tenure review and promotion decisions; and several smaller subcommittees (on Undergraduate and Graduate Affairs, for example), which oversee awards as well as curriculum issues. The Feminist, Gender, & Sexuality Studies Program welcomes your participation in its governance and encourages faculty, students, and staff to contact the Program Office to become actively involved.

Mamlakit Al Nisa'a Ein El Hilweh (The Kingdom of Women: Ein El Hilweh)
Dahna Abourahme
Documentary | Lebanon | 2011 | 54 min.
The story of the women of Ein El Hilweh refugee camp between 1982-1984 is an important chapter in the history of Palestinian refugee women in Lebanon. After the Israeli invasion of Lebanon in 1982, the camp was destroyed and its men imprisoned. Weaving between past and present, animation and daily life, it documents the community and organizing spirit of the women during this period, how they were able to rebuild the camp, protect and provide for their families while their men were held captive, and honors how women continue to contribute to the survival of the Palestinian community in exile.

Three Veils
Rolla Selbak
Feature Film | USA | 2011 | 117 min.
Set in the US, the lives of three Middle Eastern women intertwine as they struggle to defy tradition and create their own realities. Leila is the stable “girl next door” anticipating what her wedding night will be like. Her sexy, free-spirited friend Nikki is the life of every party but she’s hiding from a dark past. Amira is a shy, religious girl with a rigid, uncompromising mother. Conflicted, her strict upbringing clashes with her seemingly inexplicable desire to be around Nikki all the time. From an arranged marriage and a lesbian love affair to an abusive family situation, the film daringly tackles contemporary issues.

Women as a Force for Economic Change

Diverse panel to discuss opportunities in uncertain economic times
Tue, 09/20/2011
To be held at The National Press Club in Washington, D.C., panelists will be Nemat (Minouche) Shafik, deputy director of the International Monetary Fund, Gayle Smith, special assistant to President Obama and senior director at the National Security Council, and Anju Malhotra, vice president of research, innovation and impact at ICRW. The discussion will be moderated by BBC World News Anchor Katty Kay.
Panelists are expected to touch on a variety of issues related to how and why women worldwide are increasingly viewed as a force to improve global stability and prosperity. Indeed, The World Bank’s recently-released 2012 world development report, “Gender Equality and Development,” stresses that strengthening women financially – as well as politically and socially – is not only key to global development objectives, it’s also “smart economics.” This may be particularly true in today’s global economic crisis in which foreign aid dollars are decreasing; women could be a promising market for investments that yield multiple returns.
Women: An Emerging Market is the third event in ICRW's 35th anniversary Passports to Progressdiscussion series, which aims to advance the dialogue on critical issues likely to shape the lives of women and girls in developing countries in the coming years. Earlier gatherings in the series addressed innovations for women and challenges to and solutions for ending violence against women. Prior panelists and moderators included Dr. Rajiv Shah, administrator of United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Andrea Mitchell, NBC News chief foreign affairs correspondent and filmmaker and philanthropist Abigail Disney.
Gillian Gaynair is ICRW’s senior writer and editor.

European Youth Centre Budapest (1024 Budapest, Zivatar u. 1-3.)
[Brussels, 08 September 2011] MONA Foundation for the Women of Hungary, member of the Hungarian Women’s Lobby, is organising a conference on prostitution and trafficking for the purpose of sexual exploitation on 23 September in Budapest. Sexual exploitation and trafficking to this end of primarily women and girls is occurring on a large scale within Hungary, while many Hungarian women and girls are trafficked out of Hungary to other countries in Europe such as the Netherlands, Switzerland, Austria and Germany. Despite this, there is little in Hungary in the way of prevention, protection and prosecution.
This conference is aimed primarily at Hungarian decision-makers and professionals working with the issue and with victims/vulnerable persons and seeks to increase and improve efforts in Hungary in terms of combating the phenomena and assisting victims. The first half of the conference will be about European perspectives and experiences, while the second part will focus on the situation in Hungary and the role of the state.
EWL Policy Officer and Project Coordinator, Pierrette Pape, will speak at the conference, as will former EWL Secretary General and current EU Anti-Trafficking Coordinator, Myria Vassiliadou.
Please find below the programme and registration contact.

Trafficking in Persons Report 2011

Secretary Clinton (June 27): "Every year, we come together to release this report, to take stock of our progress, to make suggestions, and to refine our methods. Today, we are releasing a new report that ranks 184 countries, including our own. One of the innovations when I became Secretary was we were going to also analyze and rank ourselves, because I don’t think it’s fair for us to rank others if we don’t look hard at who we are and what we’re doing. This report is the product of a collaborative process that involves ambassadors and embassies and NGOs as well as our team here in Washington. And it really does give us a snapshot about what’s happening. It shows us where political will and political leadership are making a difference."  Full Text»

Insight to Action: Gender and Property Rights

Securing women’s property rights is increasingly recognized as critical to achieving poverty reduction and gender equality. However, many women are unable to realize their rights.
ICRW’s research and program work in gender and property rights aims to advance knowledge on how women’s and men’s property rights are measured and to strengthen community-based programs addressing women’s property rights.
ICRW experts will discuss the results from two programs in sub-Saharan Africa.

Conference: Emerging Technologies and Treatment in Women’s Health

Date: 02.05.10 – 05.05.10
Location: Canada – Hyatt Regency Hotel, Montreal, Quebec

The International Society for Emerging Technologies and Treatment in Women's Health is holding its first annual conference in Montreal, Quebec, from 2-5 May, 2010.
In the past several decades numerous treatments and devices have been introduced into the armamentarium to treat disorders and diseases in women. While many of these innovations have proven their value in reducing pain and suffering and improving patient quality of life, no international body has existed to evaluate their safety, efficacy and cost effectiveness.
The conference will focus on emerging technologies and address issues related to advances in minimally invasive surgery, including robotic surgery and natural orifice intraluminal endoscopic surgery, ultrasound technologies, treatment of uterine fibroids with embolization and focused ultrasound, and advances in assisted reproductive technologies including in-vitro maturation treatment and fertility preservation. New treatment or new indication of existing treatment and state of the art image-capturing in medicine will also be discussed.
Based in Montreal, the International Society for Emerging Technologies and Treatment in Women’s Health is composed of leading clinicians and researchers, whose goal is to evaluate the safety and efficacy of emerging technologies in women’s health.
